The National Post published some extracts from the book Sun Rise, by Rick George, who was CEO of Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) from 1991 until May of this year.
In the excerpt, George takes aim at actress Daryl Hannah and director, producer and writer James Cameron.
Hannah has been arrested for protesting TransCanada Pipelines' proposed Keystone XL pipeline while George notes that Cameron has been quoted as saying the oil sands is a “Pandora” and “a black eye for Canada."
On its website, Suncor says it "holds one of the largest positions in the oil sands."
George takes aim at media organizations that have apparently failed to ask key questions of celebrity protesters.
He says Peter Mansbridge, who interviewed Cameron for the CBC, could have asked Cameron:
“How do you travel between your home, your ranch and other locations?” and “How did you get to Alberta from your home in California?”
Critics might describe the book as self-serving to the oil industry, but George is on the mark with these questions.
George was succeeded as CEO of Suncor by Steve Williams on May 1.
Sun Rise is published by HarperCollins Canada, ISBN Number ISBN: 9781443408929.
According to his profile on the Internet Movie Database, Cameron has produced and directed, among others, Titanic and Avatar. He produced Terminator 2 and Point Break, and directed True Lies, Terminator (in 1984) and Aliens. He wrote Terminator 3.
Hannah, who was arrested earlier this month in Texas at an anti-pipeline protest, has, according to IMDB, starred in Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Attack of the 50-foot Woman and others.
